Local organization aids homeless teen population (WTVO)
ROCKFORD - Homelessness can be a difficult problem to track and to tackle. But one local organization is teaming up with local businesses to collect donations to help combat the homeless teen population in Rockford.
"People may not know that in our own backyards there are individuals that are struggling," said Shatter Our Silence founder and executive director Kevin Polky.
Rockford has the second largest homeless teen population in the state of Illinois. One organization, Just Breathe 815, began tackling the problem earlier this year. They team up with multiple stateline businesses to make a difference for these young adults. Twice a month, they host distribution drop off dates, where homeless youth and others in need are welcome.
"When they come in, we can wash their clothes," said Just Breathe 815 founder Kevin Ware. "We can provide them with new clothing as well, a hot or cold meal, and a safe haven for them to feel like they matter and have worth."
